Starmork X-tend Review: Is This Expanding Game Table Worth Backing?

Enter the Starmork X-tend, a brand-new Kickstarter project that aims to deliver an affordable, highly modular setup for tabletop gamers. But is this expanding game table actually worth your hard-earned cash, or is it too good to be true?

I got my hands on an early prototype and analyzed its design, features, and overall performance.
Packages, Pricing, and Sizing Breakdown
The Starmork X-tend lineup centers around two base widths (Slim and Full), starting at roughly 5 feet long in their default state. Depending on your space and needs, you can scale the size up using two distinct modes: Gather Mode (around 7 feet long) and Celebration Mode (expanding to over 8 feet long).
Backers can choose between three primary Kickstarter packages:
- Essential Package (Under $500): Includes the base table along with 4 topper panels, turning the recessed play area into a dining table.
- Plus Extension Set (Approx. $700): Adds 1 extension leaf and 5 topper panels for larger table configurations.
- Full Extension Set (Under $1,000): Includes 2 extension leaves and 6 topper panels, giving you full access to all 3 expansion sizes.
If you can only afford to back a smaller option now,, expansion leaves will also be sold individually so you can add on.
Prototype Hands-On: The Pros and Cons
Testing out an early prototype during game nights and family meals revealed several key strengths alongside a few areas for improvement.
The Highlights: Engineering and Build Quality
The stand-out feature of this expanding game table is its expansion system. Driven by an internal metal gear and track system paired with wooden support bars, adjusting the table size is remarkably smooth. Transitioning the table into Gather Mode can easily be done by a single person.
From a structural standpoint, the build is solid:
- Materials: Features solid wood legs, an aluminum frame, and sturdy plywood or high-quality particle board toppers finished with a clean, grained veneer.
- Accessories: The table includes recessed magnetic rails on both the interior and exterior to mount magnetic accessories like cup holders, wine glass holders, bit trays, and card holders.
- Play Area: Smooth play surface joints keep mats flat during multi-hour RPG sessions or board game campaigns.
Areas to Consider
While the functionality shines, a few cons caught my attention during testing:
- Leg Room: The prototype felt cramped around the edges due to extension hardware extending beneath the surface. However, the development team has already updated the production design with three to six inches of extra vertical clearance to make more space for you.
- Topper Stability: The dining toppers fit securely together using built-in pegs and magnets, but they can shift if you bump them. To fix this, an anti-wobble block mechanism has been integrated into the final production topper panels.
- Aesthetics: In Gaming Mode, the table looks fantastic. In Dining Mode, it leans toward a clean, conference-style aesthetic rather than a traditional dining table for the home.
What About Those Scam Rumors?
If you remember Starmork’s last crowdfunding campaign, you might have seen online chatter comparing Starmork to a notorious campaign by a company named Toyzzo, which failed to deliver and was banned from Kickstarter.
The concern was understandable due to similarities in the campaigns. Despite those initial red flags, in my opinion the rumors are unfounded. Starmork says they have no affiliation with Toyzzo. More importantly, Starmork completely fulfilled its previous crowdfunding campaign rewards to backers. They maintain open communication, responded well to my direct critiques, and they’re actively the X-tend even now.
While backing any crowdfunding project involves inherent risk, the evidence shows a transparent company working hard to deliver an innovative product.
