Min/maxing is all about building the most optimized and powerful character by maximizing attributes and abilities while minimizing weaknesses. If you’re a min/maxer, or if you’re just optimization-curious, this is a safe space. I’m going to give you some tips, and we’re going to walk through a couple broken builds.
And if you’re a DM or player who wishes that one guy would STOP trying to ruin D&D night, please stick around because I want to give you AND the optimizers some insights into how and why it can be good for everybody.
Tip #1: Get to know your party first.
Bring it up at session zero. If the campaign is a god-mode, high fantasy jaunt, if everybody at the table loves ultra-optimized characters, go for it! But if most of the players value story and character depth more, you might need to tone it down. And you definitely need to play with respect for the others at the table. Or, if it’s that important to you, you might want to try a different group.
Tip #2: Work with your Dungeon Master.
Communicate what you’re looking for in the game, and what your goals for optimizing your character are. You need your DM’s buy-in. As long as you’re transparent and show respect, min-maxing you can help everybody have fun.
