4 Non-Negotiable Features of Runnable TTRPG Modules
We’ve all been confronted with massive walls of text and illogical layout when opening up a published adventure. Too many designers approach descriptions like they’re writing a fantasy novel, making it almost impossible to find the info you need during a session unless you have a photographic memory. You want to keep your game moving without sinking hours into rewriting the book. Runnable TTRPG modules are essential. And a truly runnable adventure relies on four non-negotiable features that turn it into a practical tool for your table instead of a chore.

1. Scannable Layouts Over Novel-Style Prose
Text needs to be brief and organized enough for you to find what you need at a glance. Games like Mothership, Nimble, and various OSR modules get this right by leaning on bullet points, short sentences, bold keywords, and clear headers.
Stat blocks should be streamlined and easy to read inline, too. Other features like color-coding elements (which I do in my Nimble adventure Riddle of the Veiled Isles) helps your eyes jump straight to the right spot. Read-aloud text can still set the vibe, but it’s got to be brief so it doesn’t stall the momentum.
2. Meaningful Random Encounters
Random encounters shouldn’t just be filler or another boring fight with d8 stirges. Every encounter needs to feel meaningful, memorable, and tied to the world or the story.
A great random encounter gives players a taste of the setting, drops a clue, or hands out a fun item. In Riddle of the Veiled Isles, for example, floating wreckage might hold a body with gold or a clue for an upcoming puzzle. Or you might roll a 1 and cross paths with Cthulhu.
3. Thematic Challenges
Threats need to make sense in the context of your environment, not just have a level appropriate Challenge Rating. When plot points feel disconnected, you’re forced to invent story hooks just to make sense of why a monster is sitting in a room. Using setting-appropriate threats keeps the world feeling cohesive.
4. Real GM Support
A good module actually helps you run the session while you’re sitting behind the screen. Dedicated GM notes give you answers when questions pop up without forcing you to railroad your group or spend ten minutes looking up a rule. In Riddle of the Veiled Isles, include reminders about earlier clues, advice on running it as a one-shot, and a safety net for one of those near-TPK moments.
