DCC Combat Is the Chaos D&D IS Missing
Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC) is a wild ride, and if you’ve been feeling like modern gaming has turned into a predictable slog of encounter balancing, this game is the wake-up call you’ve been looking for. Goodman Games has put together a system that perfectly nails that gritty, pulp-fiction vibe from Appendix N, but they’ve cranked the chaos dial all the way up.

Combat: Where Chaos Reigns
In DCC, you can forget about that standard “I swing, I hit, I do damage” loop. Combat is a volatile, messy event where the dice are just as likely to ruin your hero as they are to save them.
- The Fumble Factor: A natural 1 isn’t just a miss here. Depending on your armor, you’re rolling on a fumble table—and if you’re rocking heavy armor, you’re rolling a d16 where the higher the number, the worse your day gets.
- Crit Tables: Natural 20s are a whole different beast. Instead of just doubling your damage, you roll a class-specific “crit die” that gets bigger as you level up, which can lead to everything from a broken bone to instant, permanent paralysis for your enemy.

The Brutality of the Funnel
If you’ve ever wanted to know what it feels like to play a character that is truly vulnerable, the DCC “zero-level funnel” is the ultimate testing ground.
- You manage a handful of zero-level characters at once, often starting with as little as 1 hit point each.
- Most of them are going to die—it’s essentially a meat grinder—and only the few who survive get to call themselves level-one adventurers.
- It really drives home the idea that your heroes aren’t on a straight path to power, and sometimes the smartest move you can make is just to run away.
Designing for Uncertainty
DCC makes it impossible to “build” a character the way you might in other games; you pretty much have to play the hand you’re dealt. You can’t optimize your way out of this one.
- Your ability scores are rolled in order using 3d6, and there’s no swapping allowed.
- Your background is randomized on a d100 table, so you might end up as a jester, a woodcutter, or—everyone’s favorite—a gongfarmer (yes, that means you clean the outhouses).
- The game keeps you grounded as an average person, making those brutal encounters feel even more desperate.
Managing Life and Limb
When you hit 0 HP in DCC, you aren’t just looking at a standard death save loop; the consequences are immediate and often permanent.
- If you’re saved while bleeding out, you’ll suffer a permanent penalty to one of your physical stats—at least you get a cool scar for your trouble.
- Healing is a slow, painful grind, with a full night’s rest only netting you 1 HP.
- Luck is your most important resource, and it’s a nightmare to get back, often forcing you to literally plead with the gods just to keep your head above water.
